Apess son of the forest summary12/5/2023 ![]() “By what you read,” he succinctly puts it, “you may learn how deep your principles are.” While Apess knows full well that many are but “skin-deep,” he concludes instead with an appeal to “ye noble-hearted” of his readers: “pray you stop not till this tree of distinction shall be leveled to the earth, and the mantle of prejudice turn from every American heart.” ![]() Yet Apess’ essay offers more than just facts and arguments-it also presents precisely what it claims: a looking glass through which white Americans could and can examine their own perspectives and actions. In the fourteen paragraphs that follow this striking opening, he deploys a wide and convincing range of evidence and logic in support of his goal of social and political equality between the races. In early American literary history, Apess was matched in his skills at argumentative and persuasive rhetoric only by Thomas Paine and Frederick Douglass. Now I ask if degradation has not been heaped long enough upon the Indians? And if so, can there not be a compromise? Is it right to hold and promote prejudices? If not, why not put them all away? Having a desire to place a few things before my fellow creatures who are traveling with me to the grave, and to that God who is the maker and preserver both of the white man and the Indian, whose abilities are the same and who are to be judged by one God, who will show no favor to outward appearances but will judge righteousness. The first sentences of “Looking-Glass” establish the conversational style and tone, pointed social and spiritual arguments, and audience engagement that are hallmarks of the essay: Perhaps most notably, Apess also published (as an addendum to his edited collection of conversion narratives The Experiences of Five Christian Indians of the Pequot Tribe) an essay that distills much of his unique life, impressive work, and potent voice into a concise, very readable form: “An Indian’s Looking-Glass for the White Man” (1833). The Pequot Indian’s contributions to American culture and history are undeniable. ![]() Apess was a strong proponent of change for the better, striving to improve the quality of life for Native Americans in the fledgling United States of America. As a passionate advocate of Native American rights, he helped the Mashpee Revolt of 1833-1834 gain traction, later documenting its legal and cultural triumphs in the book Indian Nullification of the Unconstitutional Laws of Massachusetts (1833). He was also the author of the first published Native American autobiography, A Son of the Forest (1829). We can only regret it, and flee from it, and from henceforth, let peace and righteousness be written upon our hearts and hands forever.” –William Apessīorn in 1798 in Colrain, MA, William Apess was a mixed-race man who began life as an indentured servant, served in the army during the War of 1812’s Quebec campaign, and became a traveling Methodist minister. “You and I have to rejoice that we have not to answer for our fathers’ crimes, neither shall we do right to charge them one to another. 13299 e colossal cave rd12/5/2023 ![]() 13299 E Colossal Cave Rd, Vail, AZ 85641 Add to Calendar Jul 14 8:00 AM 2:00 PM Open House - Vail Virtual Live (Grades 6-8 only). ![]() ![]() United Community Health Center - Old Vail Middle School. 12955 E Colossal Cave Rd, Vail, AZ 85641 Add to Calendar Jul 13 5:00 PM 7:00 PM Open House/Meet the Teacher Night - Ocotillo Ridge Elementary School. Vin diesel squish ball12/5/2023 ![]() Not only they usually feature awful acting and worse scripts but they tend to be repetitive. As for the scare factor, I am not an avid horror-movie watcher. As I said, the camerawork and the lighting are exellent. The action sequences are actually interesting to watch. Whereas there are a few "scientific" errors, there are a lot of curious little details which make the movie believable. (I wonder what D&D character he usually plays ). On the countrary, in this movie I couldn't imagine anyone else in this role. I am no fan of Vin after such dumbster material as XXX but now I see he isn't bad. Surprised I was when I saw that Vin Diesel ACTED. ![]() The acting is, in my opinion, most excellent. Nothing exciting about this plot as it seems to be the only possible way for an american horror/sci-fi. One of those passengers is a policeman who escorts a dangerous criminal to a prison after the later is finally caught. The story seems typical but the developement isn't.Ī civilian trader ship crashes on a desert planet, carrying some passengers. The camerawork is professional, the lighting is excellent and the 3d effects, although a tiny bit outdated, do not overwhelm the movie. Pitch Black certainly doesn't look like a big-budget movie, nevertheless, it looks pleasent. It's not often that I have a burning wish to buy a DVD, especially when the market is filled with american big-budget but low-sense flicks. Now Aliens probably being one (if not the) of my favorite Sci-Fi movies, nothing untill today could come close. Adding in more licensed music would have undoubtedly increased the price of the game but it already felt like a full price game and it would have made the whole experience more memorable. The checkpoint system is also near perfect, if you die at any point during the game, there are no lives, even during some of the longer boss fights you don’t always need to start from the very beginning which is greatįor a game that is centred around music, it would have been nice to have a little more licensed music. Venturing of the beaten path during the first playthrough will help you discover different types of currency and resources, but its on the new game plus that exploration gets rewarded with secret doors that you are able to access after finishing the game. The platforming sections were the most enjoyable, even though the character felt just a tad under precise. ![]() There are a few too many battle arenas which can feel receptive by the end with the same basic robots with a few new introductions every so often that test your new abilities but this might depend on your affinity towards battle arenas. Combine the change in scenery with the constant slow drip feed of skills to add to your arsenal, along with puzzle sections, and platforming and Hi-Fi Rush shreds through its 10 hours of play while keeping it mostly fresh. They are all quite distinct in their own way. The levels reflect the different arms of the company from security, marketing, research and so on. You play as Chai, a human who underwent a futuristic robotic arm replacement procedure and is now considering defective, which means that the Vandelay wants him terminated and the whole theme that humans are disposable. Another futuristic mega corporation stealing your personal information and doing unsavoury things is nothing new, but it serves its place moving you from one boss to the next which is the focal point of Hi-Fi Rush. The story is essentially about nothing, hence the corporation name Vandelay. It still feels like a full priced premium game and better than many other games released these days, which is why I found it confusing that it was only around 30 bucks depending on your region. Hi-Fi Rush is on the shorter side at around 10 hours to complete on normal difficulty, my time was just under 9 hours but I was moving along fast. It can hard to figure out when to parry, grapple or when to use your ally at times but for the most part you can digest the insane amount of information being relayed to you. The amount of things happening on screen at once without a dropped frame is very impressive. Hi-Fi Rush is current gen only and it shows as it runs at a flawless 4K60 on the Xbox Series X. Hi-Fi Rush is stunning, not only in the art style, environments and animation but also on a technical side. Sometimes throwing too many ingredients into a smoothie can lead to something that is unpalatable, but Hi-Fi Rush is a very tasty creation. It’s like if you took Jet Set Radio Future, Devil May Cry, Guitar Hero and threw them in a futuristic anime blender. Hi-Fi Rush is part rhythm game, part action and part platformer. Cabin fever 201612/5/2023 I honestly wish it could have been better, but redemptively, it was an honourable failure. To me, it just felt to me like a bunch of stuff i'd seen from some of the classic horror movies mashed in with one interesting premise. I think its designed brilliantly and has an environmental message, and I admire Roth's aspirations to not skimp on gore or sex, but it was unnecessary to the plot. In this grisly remake of the 2002 horror hit, five college chums rent an isolated. But in the end it's interesting twist to the typical cabin in the woods story doesn't fully make it work. Cabin Fever (2016) 'You can't run from what's inside.' Audience Score. ![]() There was also very few shocks, and once I adjusted to the carnage, consequently, it wasn't that scary. However he shows almost no creativity in Cabin Fever and for me he never demonstrated the extent of his talent. All this adds up to the construction of a cheesy 80's horror movie, which was exactly what Roth was trying to mimic. Especially considering the tiny budget it was made on. Firstly, the acting is much better than I expected it would be, and the gore is disgusting and boasts some pretty impressive bloody corpse special effects. But that's just damning it with very faint praise. Rating: R (Language|Brief Drug Use|Sexuality|Strong Violence and Gore)ĭefinitely Eli Roth's most inspired, and most substantial film. ![]() The friends struggle to stop the contagious, flesh-eating disease while on the run from a group of ornery backwoods locals out for revenge. How many of you remember when websites had the “Best viewed on Internet Explorer”? It would be fun to see a website with a “Best viewed on iPhone” tag. Auto-login with iCloud or Google Auth, straight from the browser, could also be a new thing this year. We will see more and more sites with Apple Pay, Google Pay integrations, simplified and mobile UX-driven designs, pushing for mobile-first. The shift from desktop to mobile-first happened a long time ago, and we need to start accepting that. Website speed on mobile is still statistically about 2-3 times slower than on desktops and is usually not optimized for viewing, let alone purchases or interactions. My most considerable concern is that we are still way behind with the mobile versions of websites. This way, you can retrieve Web3 content and serve it via HTTPS on a classic domain.
